Eventually, of course, these led to several big screen sequels and spin-off television series. But it wasn’t until 1979′ The Motion Picture that Gene Roddenberry’s little cult series really became a money-making cash cow for Paramount. “But wait!” – you might be yelling at your screen right now – “ Star Trek began in 1966!” Yes, the original series aired for three seasons in the sixties, and had a short lived animated revival. And it essentially began the Star Trek franchise as we know it. ![]() Robert Wise’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released forty years ago today, on December 7th, 1979.
